Preliminary test result

The DSC-measurement in a closed glass crucible in a high pressure crucible showed an endothermic effect in the temperature range 160-195 °C and an exothermal effect in the temperature range of 195-265 °C with an overall energy of 1620 J/g and 1748 J/g, respectively. The heat of decomposition was above 500 J/g. Therefore further tests on explosive properties had to be performed.

Individual results

Mechanical sensitivity (friction): The test item was sieved < 0.5 mm. No explosion occurred within 6 tests using a pinload of 360 N, only a discoloration of the test item was observed in 5 of 6 tests.

Mechanical sensitivity (shock):

The test item was sieved < 0.5 mm. No explosion within 6 tests using a mass of 10 kg falling from a height of 0.4 m was observed, only decomposition in 3 of 6 tests was observed.

Thermal sensitivity:

Three tests were performed with a circular nozzle plate with a hole of 2 mm diameter.

The test on thermal sensitivity carried out with a nozzle with a diameter of 2.0 mm showed no explosion. Compared to the nozzle with a diameter of 6.0 mm the venting area of the nozzle with 2.0 mm is smaller by an order of magnitude. Additionally the physical state of the test substance (pure solid) and the chemical structure excludes the enrichment of high energy components caused by evaporation of volatile solvents. Due to these facts an explosion with a nozzle width of 6.0 mm is excluded.

Final result:

The test item Clothianidin technical substance had no explosive properties under the test conditions in the sense of EU Method A.14. and in the sense of the US EPA Guideline OCSPP 830.6316.

Final result: no explosive properties under the test conditions in the sense of EC Method A.14.

Description of key information

not explosive

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

The substance demonstrates no explosive properties in the sense of the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, Method A. 14. It is confirmed by the results of an earlier supporting experiment (EC A.14).

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data on explosive properties of the test substance is not sufficient for non-classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP). The reason for no classification is "data lacking".
