Description of key information

The partition coefficient of 1,6-dichlorohexane was determined to be log Pow 3.50 at 25°C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
3.5
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

A study was conducted to determine the partition coefficient octanol water of the test substance. Therefore a defined amount of 1.6 dichlorohexane was weight into 25 mL n-octanol and was equilibrated with 25 mL ultra-pure water. The phases were separated and the water phase was extracted with chloroform and the concentration of 1.6 dichlorohexan was determined using GC-FID method. The determination was done in triplicate. The log Pow was determined to be 3.50 at 25 °C.

In addition in accordance with R.7.1.8.4 of guidance on IR/CSA Chapter R.7A and in compliance with section 1.3 Annex XI of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 the partition coefficient of 1,6-dichlorohexane was calculated using QSAR methods. The partition coefficient octanol-water was calculated with ACD Labs software to be 3.557 at 25 °C. Using KOWWIN software the partition coefficient octanol-water was calculated to be log Pow = 3.8. In conclusion the experimental determined value was support by the QSAR estimation. Thus, the experimental value was chosen as key value for risk assessment.
