Toxicity to soil macroorganisms except arthropods

Description of key information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH annex IX, the short-term toxicity to invertebrates test (soil macroorganisms, required in section 9.4.1) is not necessary as exposure of the soil compartment is unlikely. The substance is manufactured and handled in the closed system. In addition, an exposure is not to be expected, as no sludge application from STP on soil will be done and aerial deposition is negligible. Thus, exposure of the aquatic compartment is unlikely. The chemical safety assessment does not indicate the need to investigate further the effects of the substance and/or degradation products on terrestrial organisms. The RCRs were well below 1. Furthermore, in the biodegradation test (see section 5.2.1), the substance 1,6-Dichlorohexane is classified as not readily biodegradable in the 10-d-window and after 61 days according to OECD guideline no. 310. However, the biodegradation of the test item came to 54 % after 61 days showing biodegradation with longer exposure times. Thus, long-term exposure of the environment is expected low due to the biodegradation of the substance. Further terrestrial testing would consequently not improve the risk assessment.
