Description of key information

The toxicity of growth inhibition to aquatic plants (Pseudokirchenerilla subcapitata) was measured during 72 hours and showed an EC50 of 84 mg/L; and a NOEC of 25 mg/L was calculated. The substance has to be classified as harmful to aquatic organisms based on the result of this study in accordance with the criteria set in Directive 67/548/EC and Regulation (EC) 1272/2008.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
84 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
25 mg/L

Additional information

No assignable toxicity tests to aquatic algae using tetrachlorophthalic anhydride as test substance are available. As tetrachlorophthalic anhydride hydrolysis rapidly in water forming the hydrolysis product tetrachlorophthalic acid (CAS 632-58-6), tests with tetrachlorophthalic acid were used to evaluate the toxicity to aquatic algae.
