Conclusion on classification

According to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (Index No. 607-242-00-1) tetrachlorophthalic anhydride, CAS no. 117 -08 -8, EC no. 204 -171 -4 is classified as Aquatic Acute 1, H400 “Very toxic to aquatic life” and Aquatic Chronic 1, H410 “Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects”.

According to the information summarized in present dossier for tetrachlorophthalic anhydride, classification may be changed. A classification as Aquatic Acute 3, H402 “Harmful to aquatic life.” and Aquatic Chronic 3, H412 “Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects” is proposed for the following reasons:

- The most sensitive acute toxicity is to algae: 72h-EC50 of 84 mg/L and a NOEC of 25 mg/L.

- Not readily biodegradable with 0 % degradation observed in 28 days.

With the data listed above, tetrachlorophthalic anhydride should be classified to "Chronic Category 3" according to GHS [Regulation (EC) 1272/2008].
