Description of key information

Tetrachlorophthalic anhydride is not readily biodegradable and its hydrolysis product tetrachlorophthalic acid (CAS 632-58-6) is considered to be not readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed

Additional information

There is only one study on ready biodegradability of tetrachlorophthalic anhydride available. In a modified MITI test comparable to the OECD TG 301C the biodegradation of tetrachlorophthalic anhydride was investigated at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, Japan. After 4 weeks of incubation, no degradation of the substance was observed.
