Description of key information
An acute toxicity study on Daphnia Magna based on the OECD guideline No. 202 and conducted according to GLP was performed. 100% immobility was observed after 48 hours at the highest tested concentration (i.e. 100% Saturated Solution) however due to analytical difficulties encountered during the study, the 48h-EC50 for Daphnia magna exposed to MOVE3 could not be quantified.
The analytical difficulties were ascribed to the MOVE 3 properties (poorly soluble, extremely volatile liquid with a boiling point of 19.5°C). Since all the feasible measures for improving the analytical performance were applied unsuccessfully the test was considered technically unfeasible.
As the same analytical difficulties are anticipated to be encountered in other ecotoxicological studies, the Algae Growth Inhibition Test and the Fish Acute toxicity test are considered technically unfeasible.
Read Across analysis have then been performed to predict the short-term toxicity to algae, invertebrates and fish. The results are reported in the table below. All the predictions had a medium uncertainty.
| No. of Analogues | Result | Prediction uncertainty |
Algae | 2 | EC50 > 0.23 mg/L | medium |
D. magna | 2 | EC50 > 0.312 mg/L | medium |
Fish | 1 | EC50 > 0.52 mg/L | medium |
Based on the immobility data observed in the D.magna study (100% immobility at the saturated solution, 0% immobility at the 10% dilution of the saturated solution) and considering that the saturated concentration is expected to be between 2 and 6.5 mg/L ( basing on the solubility of MOVE 3 in water, estimated to range between 2.4 and 6.2 mg/L), the EC50 of MOVE for D.magna is therefore estimated to be in the range 0.2 - 6.5 mg/L. This is consistent with the read across prediction, where EC50 value for D.magna was predicted to be > 0.312 mg/L.
The read across predictions also suggest a same order of sensitivity of the three trophic levels in regards of the toxicity to MOVE3.
