Sublethal observations / clinical signs:

Preliminary testing of eight collectors (xanthates) and four frothers in 96-h static and 28-day flow-through bioassays using rainbow trout as the test organism show a great disparity in the toxicity of the chemicals administered in these two ways.

For the short-term tests, the relative toxicity of the compounds is expressed as an lc50 or as a range of concentration in mg l-1 in which the lc50 is expected to fall. Of the collectors tested in this way sodium ethyl and potassium amyl xanthate were the most toxic, with lc50's in the range of 30-50 mg l-1. Among the frothers, xylenol (cresylic acid) was found to be the most toxic (5.6 mg l-1 >lc50 > 3.2 mg l-1) while polypropylene glycol was least toxic (lc50 > 1000 mg l-1).

The long-term tests using potassium ethyl, sodium isopropyl, sodium ethyl, and potassium amyl xanthate indicated that in the flow-through system, the toxicity of the chemicals was in the order of 100 fold greater compared with the static bioassay results.

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
Under the conditions of the present test Sodium O-isobutyl dithiocarbonate (SIBX) induced no mortality in Oncorhynchus mykiss (Rainbow Trout) below 20 mg/l (NOEC). One of the 96h-LC50 was 100 mg/l

Under the conditions of the present test Sodium isopropyl xanthate induced no mortality in Oncorhynchus mykiss (Rainbow Trout) in static conditions below 43.4mg/l (NOEC). One of the 96h-LC50 was 217 mg/l.
Under the conditions of the present test Sodium isopropyl xanthate induced 100% mortality in Oncorhynchus mykiss (Rainbow Trout) in flow-through conditions at 0.3 mg/l. One of the72h-LC100 was 0.3 mg/l.

A 48 h LC50 of 196 mg/L (saltwater) has been determined for the effects of the test substance on mortality of the Poecilia reticulata (Guppy)
Endpoint:
short-term toxicity to fish
Type of information:
other: published data
Adequacy of study:
weight of evidence
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
Justification for type of information:
Carbon disulphide is both a reagent in the manufacture, as well as a decomposition product of xanthates. SIBX readily decomposes to carbon disulphide, especially in the presence of moisture/water. Therefore, the health effects of carbon disulphide (CS2) need to be considered in the assessment of SIBX.

Conclusions:
Under the conditions of the present test the 96-h LC50 of Carbon disulphide (CS2) as a decomposition product of Sodium isobutyl xanthate in the presence of water was 4 mg/L.
Executive summary:

A semi-static test in a sealed system was carried out to determine the toxicity of CS2 as a decomposition product of Sodium isobutyl xanthate in the presence of water to the fish Poecilia reticulata. The test fulfilled the requirements of OECD Guidline 203 but was not carried out in compliance with GLP. The 96-h LC50 of CS2 for Poecilia reticulata was 4 mg/L.
