Description of key information

The toxicity of the first eight primary alcohols and of three secondary alcohols was determined for Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans. For both species, ethanol was the best tolerated alcohol. The toxicity of primary alcohols increased with the length of the molecule, from ethanol on. Secondary alcohols were more toxic than the corresponding primary compounds. In almost all cases, D. melanogaster was more tolerant than D. simulans and the greatest difference was observed with ethanol. In this framework, the toxicity (3d-LC50) of heptan-1-ol to D. melanogaster and to D. simulans was respectively estimated at 0.42 (female), 0.37 (male) and 0.38 (female), 0.42 (male) % alcohol.
