Description of key information

Two studies on algae are available (Bringmann et al.,1978; Sloof et al., 1983) but it was proposed to perform an additional study, carried out according to current quality standards.

The toxicity of n-heptanol to Pseudokirschneriella subcapitata was evaluated according to the OECD testing guideline 201 and GLP requirements (Gancet et al., 2012). However, this study was disregarded due to the high variability observed in algae growth rate in the control group, indicating significant methodological deficiencies (Klimisch 3b).

Nevertheless, a GLP OECD 201 study meeting all validity criteria was identified (Mitsubishi, 2001). The results of this reliable study were selected as key values for chemical safety assessment:
72h-ErC50 = 32.7 mg/L and 72h-ErC10 = 10.4 mg/L for Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
32.7 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
10.4 mg/L
