Description of key information

An assessment of the hydrolysis of 1-[(2-Hydroxyethyl)thio]propan-2-ol was performed based on the molecular structure of the substance as well as the available data on the physico-chemical properties of the substance and those of similar substances. It concluded that 1-[(2-Hydroxyethyl)thio]propan-2-ol is hydrolytically stable under the pH and temperature conditions of physiological and environmental relevance.

An assessment was performed to determine the soil adsorption coefficient (Koc) of 1-[(2-hydroxyethyl)thio]propan-2-ol. It included a literature search that allowed to identify suitable information and data relating to the substance. A KOWWIN V1.68 QSAR prediction rendered a log Kowvalue of -0.20, and based on the composition of 1-[(2-hydroxyethyl)thio]propan-2-ol, it is considered appropriate to estimate the soil sorption of the substance from the octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow). A substance is regarded by SETAC (1993): Guidance Document on Sediment Toxicity Tests and Bioassays for Freshwater and Marine Environments as having the potential for adsorption if its log10 Kocor log10 Kowis3. As 1-[(2-hydroxyethyl)thio]propan-2-ol has a log Kowof -0.20 that is below 3, the substance is expected to have a low potential for adsorption and, therefore, additional adsorption-desorption data is not required under REACH Annex VIII. Any sorption of 1-[(2-hydroxyethyl)thio]propan-2-ol] to soil or sediment will be negligible.

The ready biodegradation of 1-[(2-hydroxyethyl)thio]propan-2-ol in an aerobic aqueous environment was determined in line with OECD Guideline 301 D - Ready Biodegradability: Closed Bottle Test. The study satisfied all validity criteria and a minor deviation, in which no valid microbial count could be obtained for aged inoculum, was not believed to have had an effect on the final result. After 28 days, percentage biodegradation of 1-[(2-hydroxyethyl)thio]propan-2-ol was report as 15 % (based on O2 consumption). This result did not achieve the pass removal level of 60 % of theoretical maximum within the 10 (or 14) day window. It is possible to conclude, therefore, that 1-[(2-hydroxyethyl)thio]propan-2-ol is not readily biodegradable under test conditions.
