Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

A single hydrolysis study (Fischer 2004) exists. The half-life of hydrolysis at pH 4 and 7 was calculated to be <12h based on preliminary test data. At pH 9 the half-life was calculated as

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Half-life for hydrolysis:
220.8 h
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

The hydrolysis of Trimethylorthoformate was tested according to EU Method C.7 (Degradation: Abiotic Degradation: Hydrolysis as a Function of pH, 1992). The study is considered valid and conclusive.

A preliminary hydrolysis test was performed for 24 hours at 50°C with the test substance (purity: 99.7%) at pH 4, 7 and 9.

At pH 4 and 7 the hydrolysis was very fast (100 and 97.8% after 1 hour respectively). The main test was triggered at pH 9 since the test substance was hydrolised to 38.5% after 24 hours. Methanol was identified as a transformation product at pH 4, 7 and 9. Methyl formate was identified as degradation product at pH 4 and 7, but not at pH 9.

The main hydrolysis test was performed at pH 9 and at 25 and 50°C. Pseudo first-order rate constants of k = 4.067 x 10E-02 hE-01 and k = 3.139 x 10E-03 hE-01 corresponding to half-lives of t = 17.0 h and t = 220.8 h were calculated respectively for 25 and 50 °C.
