Additional information

Sah (1932) reported the synthesis of trimethyl orthoformate from methanol, sodium and chloroform. Residual sodium chloride was removed by filtration. The clear filtrate was then fractionated at atmospheric pressure. The higher constant boiling fraction was collected and redistilled three times until the product was considered pure. The substance was reported to be a colourless liquid.

Deutsch (1879) reported that the test substance was synthesised from methanol, sodium and chloroform. The reaction mass was fractionated via distillation. The resulting colourless liquid was found to boil at 101-102°C.

Based on a weight of evidence approach it can be concluded that trimethyl orthoformate is a liquid at 20°C and 1013hPa
