Description of key information

The respiration activity of micro-organisms present in sewage effluent was not inhibited during 5 days of exposure to 10 mg substance/l in an OECD TG301D study. The NOEC = 10 mg/l

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
10 mg/L

Additional information

The inhibitory effect to the respiration of microorganisms was tested at 2 and 10 mg/l following the conditions of an OECD TG301D Closed Bottle Test under GLP. After 5 days the mineralisation of sodium benzoate was 57% of ThOD indicating that the inoculum was viable. In the presence of test material at 2 and 10 mg/l, degradation of benzoate was unaffected, which indicates that the test material was not inhibitory to the bacterial inoculum. Therefore, the test material is not considered inhibitory to the inoculum at a concentration of 10 mg/l (NOEC).
