Description of key information

Additional information

The substance 2 -tert-butylaminoethyl methacrylate (TBAEMA) is an ester of methacrylic acid and tert-butyl hydroxyethylamine.

Abiotic degradation

A hydrolysis test results for TBAEMA has been read across from a structurally strongly related substance DMAEMA. Hydrolysis half-lives at pH 4, 7 and 9 were observed to be >1 year (at 50 °C), 4.5 days (at 25 °C) and 3.3 hours (at 25 °C) respectively. See paragraph 5.1.3 for more details on both substances.

According to EPIWIN calculations the reaction with OH-radicals in air would result in a half-life time in air in the order of 4 hours. However the substance has based on its Henry's law constant of 0.062 Pa m3/mol a low potential to volatilise to any significant extent.

Biodegradation

In a ready biodegradation study according to OECD TG 301A (GLP, reliability 1) 49% COD removal was found after 24 days. The study demonstrates that the substance should not be considered as readily biodegradable. The most likely reason for this result is that the substance is partly degraded. The anticipated degradation product is N-tert butyl, N-hydroxyethylamine (CAS no 4620-70-6).

Bioaccummulation

The substance is expected to have a low bioaccumulation potential based on the low log Kow. Log Kow of 2.12 was estimated with the KOWWIN estimation software because the substance is not stable under test conditions.

Transport and distribution

2 -tert-butylamino ethyl methacrylate is unstable under sorption/desorption test conditions. The sorption potential was therefore estimated using KOCWIN software. The calculated Koc of 89.8 L/kg indicates that 2 -tert-butylaminoethyl methacrylate has a low sorption potential.

The Henry's Law constant at 20 °C is 0.062 Pa.m3/mol for 2 -tert-butylamino ethyl methacrylate indicating that this substance has a low tendency to evaporate from wet surfaces.
