Studies on the short-term toxicity to aquatic algae (OECD 201) and long-term toxicity to daphnia (OECD 211) are ongoing for 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl 2-ethylhexanoate (CAS No. 28510-23-8). No toxic effects up to the limit of water solubility (< 0.01 mg/L) were observed for Danio rerio and Daphnia magna in GLP-guideline studies. However, the relevance of the existing aquatic toxicity data can only be evaluated, when the results of the ongoing studies are available.

A study on the toxicity of 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl 2-ethylhexanoate to aquatic microorganisms showed no effects at 1000 mg/L test substance concentration. Therefore, disturbances in sewage treatment plants are not anticipated for this substance.

 

A 4 week study on the toxicity to soil macroorganisms (except arthropods) concluded that terrestrial bioaccumulation, secondary poisoning and indirect toxicity to humans is unlikely. This is due to data showing no significant adverse effects on reproduction, survival and growth to Eisenia fetida (earthworms) in artificial soil when exposed to 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl 2-ethylhexanoate. As such the NOEC was determined to be the highest tested concentration of 1000 mg/kg dry soil.
