The assessment is based on the data currently available. New studies, based on the category review and the final decisions issued for some of the category substances, which are also relevant for this assessment, are currently being conducted. The hazard assessment with respect to aquatic toxicity will be updated once all ongoing studies have been finalised.
The alkyl ether sulfates grouped within the AES category show similar structural, physico-chemical, environmental and toxicological properties. The approach of grouping different AES for the evaluation of their effects on human health and the environment was also made by the Danish EPA [1] and HERA [2], supporting the read across approach between structurally related AES.A detailed justification for the category approach and read-across is provided in the technical dossier (see IUCLID Section 13).
Data are available on the acute and long-term aquatic toxicity to organisms of three trophic levels (fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae) and on the toxicity to aquatic microorganisms. Based on the available read across data the acute aquatic toxicity ranged between >1 mg/L and < 10 mg/L and the long-term toxicty values ranged between >0.1 mg/L und <1 mg/L.The substance does not significantly inhibit the respiration of activated sludge microorganisms (EC50-3h > 1000 mg/L a.i.). Hence, no effects of the substance are expected during the wastewater treatment in the sewage treatment plant.
