Description of key information

The substance is not considered to cause toxic effects in birds.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

As the test substance is not classified as toxic or harmful to mammals, the substance is also not considered to cause toxic effects in birds. Elemental niobium is physiologically inert. The toxico-kinetic behavior of niobium shows no absorption takes place even after oral ingestion. In artificial solutions, mimicking physiological relevant exposure condition’s in the body (i.e. artificial - sweat solution and - gastric fluid) niobium was found to be hardly soluble (see technical dossier chapter 7.1 on toxico-kinetics). In consequence, niobium is not bioavailable under physiological relevant conditions. Thus, a study with birds is scientifically unjustified. Taking also in consideration animal welfare reasons, testing with birds will be omitted.
