Description of key information

Niobium is a lustrous, grey, ductile metal.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Physical state at 20°C and 1013 hPa:
solid

Additional information

Niobium is a soft and ductile metal and has good tensile ductility down to a low temperature of about -200 °C. This fact is supported by the low tensile strength of 172 MPa at 20 °C (Gupta, C.K. and Suri, A.K, Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium, 1994). Ductility is a solid material's ability to deform under tensile stress. Due to the softness and the ductility of niobium a conventional pulverization of the metal is not feasible. Fine FeNb particles (with a MMAD of about 991µM) are produced in the special comminution process of the massive FeNb alloy.

Furthermore a material Fines M45 (40 -250 µm; MMAD 485 µm) is available.
