Description of key information

The classification of organic peroxides into one of the seven categories of “Types A to G” is given in decision logic Figure 2.15.1 of CLP, based on the test series A to H, as described in the Part II of the UN-MTC. The substance is classified as Organic Peroxide Type C, H242.

According to chapter 2.15 of the CLP regulation, organic peroxides are thermally unstable substances or mixtures, which can undergo exothermic self-accelerating decomposition. In addition, they can have one or more of the following properties:


(i) be liable to explosive decomposition;


(ii) burn rapidly;


(iii) be sensitive to impact or friction;


(iv) react dangerously with other substances.


An organic peroxide is regarded as possessing explosive properties when in laboratory testing the mixture (formulation) is liable to detonate, to deflagrate rapidly or to show a violent effect when heated under confinement.


The classification of an organic peroxide in one of the seven categories “Types A to G” is dependent on its detonation, thermal explosion and deflagrating properties, its response to heating and the concentration.


 


Flammability in contact with water:


Based on the molecular structure as well as experience in handling and use, the substance shows no water reactive properties.


 


Pyrophoric properties:


Based on the molecular structure as well as experience in handling and use the substance shows no pyrophoric properties.


 


Self-heating substance:


According to Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, R7a, Endpoint specific guidance, R.7.1.10.7, the UN Test method N.4, for self-heating substances and mixtures does not need to be conducted as the substance is classified as organic peroxide.


 


Self-reactive substance:


According to Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, R7a, Endpoint specific guidance, R.7.1.10.4, the UN test series A - H for self-reactive substances and mixtures, do not need to be conducted as the substance is classified as organic peroxide.


 


Flammable aerosol:


According to Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, R7a, Endpoint specific guidance, R.7.1.21.1, a study for flammable Aerosol does not need to be conducted as tert-Butylperoxy-3,5,5-trimethylhexanoat does not meet the definition for Aerosol.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the results of the UN-MTC tests (below) and the decision logic, tert-butyl peroxypivalate is classified as Organic Peroxide type C.

Classification of 75%:


According to UN: Organic Peroxide Type C, liquid, temperature-controlled, UN 3113


 


Based on the study results, the molecular structure and experience in handling and use, the substance is not classified and labelled as flammable, flammable in contact with water, pyrophoric, self-reactive substance and self-heating substance according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP). In additon based on the results of the UN-MTC tests, the decision logic and in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 tert-butyl peroxypivalate is classified as Organic Peroxide Type C with H242 (heating may cause a fire).
