Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Eye and Skin Contact:

Direct contact of liquefied chloroethylene on skin may cause freeze burns and frostbite.

If liquefied chloroethylene comes in contact with the eye, immediately flush the eyes with large amounts of water, occasionally lifting the lower and the upper lids. Flush repeatedly. Get medical attention immediately. Contact lenses should not be worn when working with this chemical.

In the event of skin contact, which can cause frostbite, remove any contaminated clothing and flush the affected area repeatedly with large amounts of slightly warm water.

Inhalation:

If a person breathes in large amounts of chloroethylene, move the exposed person to fresh air at once. Keep the affected person warm and at rest. Get medical attention immediately.

Fire-fighting measures

Fire and explosion hazard:

EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE. Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames.

Will form explosive mixtures with air

May polymerize explosively when heated or involved in a fire.

Vapors from liquefied gas are initially heavier than air and spread along ground. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back.

Cylinders exposed to fire may vent and release flammable gas through pressure relief devices.

Containers may explode when heated. Ruptured cylinders may rocket.

Accidental release measures

Emergency Response in case of Spill and Leak:

Persons not wearing protective equipment and clothing should be restricted from areas of spills or leaks of chloroethylene until clean-up has been completed.

Eliminate all ignition sources (no smoking, flares, sparks or flames in immediate area). All equipment used when handling the product must be grounded. Do not touch or walk through spilled material. Stop leak if you can do it without risk. Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas.

Handling and storage

Storage:

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location. Outside or detached storage is preferred. Separate from oxidizing materials.

Protect containers against physical damage.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Engineering controls and work practices:

Should be sufficient to reduce exposures below the workplace standards for chloroethylene established by the national regulations to the lowest level achievable.

Personal Protective Equipment:

Respiratory Protection: Respiratory protection should be used in accordance with company and applicable national regulatory requirements.

Respiratory protection should be used to supplement the engineering controls and work practices.

Persons should not be assigned to tasks requiring the use of respirators unless it has been determined they are physically able to perform the work and are trained to use the equipment.

Chemical Protective Clothing:

The level of protection selected should be based on the potential chloroethylene concentration and likelihood of contact. It could range from no chemical protective clothes being required, such as when chloroethylene is handled in closed systems and there is no personnel exposure, to fully encapsulating suits with supplied-air respirators in certain spill situations.

Eye and Face Protection:

If there is a potential that liquid chloroethylene can come in contact with eye or skin, face shields and skin protective equipment must be provided and used.

Appropriate eye and face protection may be necessary to prevent contact with chloroethylene.

Stability and reactivity

REACTIVITIES & INCOMPATIBILITIES:

Can react vigorously with oxidizing materials.

Reacts with aluminum, aluminum alloys, or copper.

Vinyl chloride tends to self-polymerise explosively if peroxidation occurs

Disposal considerations

Disposal

This substance, when discarded or disposed of, is a hazardous waste. The transportation, storage, treatment, and disposal of this waste material must be conducted in compliance with local regulations for hazardous wastes.

Disposal can occur only in properly permitted facilities. Check state and local regulation of any additional requirements for disposal conditions.
