Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

Results showed no biodegradation for the test substance in a modified sturm test. The biodegradation calculated as percentage of measured amount of carbondioxide over the theory was (i) 10.5 mg test substance/L = 4 % in 28 days and (ii) 23.3 mg test substance/L = 0 % in 28 days. As a worst case assumption, the test substance is thus considered as not ready biodegradable.

A modified sturm test is available with the test substance acc. to EEC, L 251 Vol. 27 (19.09.84; 84/449/EEC,C.5). Determination of the biodegradability was performed by measurement of the carbon dioxide formation in per cent of ThCO2 (Theoretical Carbon dioxide) calculated from the ThOC (Theoretical organic carbon) or TOC (Total organic carbon). The inoculum comprised bacteria collected from a sewage treatment plant. The biodegradation calculated as percentage of measured amount of carbondioxide over the theory was (i) 10.5 mg test substance/L = 4 % in 28 days and (ii) 23.3 mg test substance/L = 0 % in 28 days. In conclusion, the test substance is not biodegradable in this test under the given conditions (CIBA-GEIGY, 1990b).
