Additional information

Cinnamon Leaf Oil is a Natural Complex Substance, a mixture consisting of slightly soluble to soluble constituents. The volume is 1-10 tonnes/year, therefore no PNEC is derived and no Hazard assessment is conducted.

Conclusion on classification

Classification

For Cinnamon Leaf oil, key studies on the aquatic toxicity are available for both Daphnia and algae. The aquatic toxicity for Daphnia and algae was determined in tests with Water Accomodated Fractions and resulted in a 48h-EL50 of 1.6 mg/L and a 72h-ErL50 of 17 mg/L respectively.

Cinnamon leaf oil is a Natural Complex Substance (NCS) for which > 90% of the constituents is identified. In the typical Cinnamon Leaf Oil, the main constituent Eugenol is present at 75% (range 70-85%). Eugenol is readily biodegradable; moreover the test substance Cinnamon Leaf oil was shown to be readily biodegradable as well.

The log Kow range for Cinnamon leaf oil constituents was found to be 1.82 - 6.3. In the typical Cinnamon leaf oil, for 21.6% of the constituents log Kow is >3, for 6.3% of the constituents log Kow is >4.

Based on the above data for acute toxicity and potential for bioaccumulation (log Kow), according to Regulation 1272/2008/EC (CLP) Cinnamon Leaf oil is classified as hazardous to the aquatic environment Chronic Category 2 (H411).
