Additional information
The primary irritation of the skin was measured according to EU Method (Acute Toxicity: Dermal Irritation / Corrosion), 1984 (equivalent or similar to OECD404). Cinnamon leaf oil was applied on the dorsal skin, clipped free of fur, of 4 albino rabbits, under a semi-occlusive dressing for a 4 hour period. Skin reaction to the material was assessed after 1, 24, 48, and 72 hours and 7 days in accordance with the scoring system by Draize. The average skin irritation scores observed at the 24, 48, 72 hour examinations were 1.3 for erythema and 0.4 for oedema. Based on these results and according to EU criteria the material was considered not irritating to the skin.
No information for eye irritation on Cinnamon leaf oil is available. For the main constituent Eugenol (70-85%, typically 80%), eye irritation information is available based on the standard Draize scale which has an overall score based on a 110 point rating scale. This rating scale is not directly compatible with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. However, eugenol appears to be severely irritating in the first 24 hours post-exposure, moderately to mildly irritating after 24 and 72 hours post-exposure, and practically non-irritating after 7 days post-exposure. As a result, the substance meets the criteria for classification as eye irritant Category 2 (H319: Causes serious eye irritation) according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Based on the available results, Cinnamon leaf oil does not have to be classified for skin irritation in accordance with the classification criteria outlined in Annex I of the CLP Regulation (1272/2008/EC).
