Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Realtive Density (D20/4) of 2-Chorobutane: 0.872

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Relative density at 20C:
0.872

Additional information

In two peer-reviewed standard handbook (CRC and Merck Index) density of 2-Chlorobutane is reported to be D20/4: 0.873 and 0.871. As A result we consider 0.872 as average being a reliable value for the relative density of 2 Chlorobutane. This si supported by data reported by Riddick et al. being 0.873 for the racemic 2-Chlorobutane at 20 °C. Giner et al. have determined the density at 25 °C to be 0.86743 g/cm3 and thus slightly lower than at 20 °C as expected.

The vapour density is reported as 3.85 g/l at 20 °C. The relative density of vapour/air mixture to dry air at 20 °C is 1.31. Thus, vapours are heavier than air creeping along the floor.
