Description of key information

Sec-butylchloride was tested for corrosivity towards standard container material such as steel and aluminium. Whereas steel has been stable towards sec-butylchloride, aluminium became fully degraded during 12 h under test conditions due to an autocatalytic reaction with aluminium chloride obviously acting as catalyst. Consequently, aluminium is unsuitable as storage container material.

Additional information

Although it is widely known that short chain hydrocarbon chlorides are reactive towards aluminium an inhouse test was performed to verify this. The results clearly indicate, that sec-butyl chloride is corrosive towards aluminium and use of aluminium as container material is advised against (e.g. communication via Safety Data Sheet and label). However, it could also be shown that stainless steel (C-Stahl St 37 -2) is stable towards sec-butyl chloride.

Due to the corrosive nature towards aluminium, sec-butylchloride has to be classified as "corrosive to metals, Category 1" as specified in Annex I number 2.16 of the CLP regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
