Conclusion on classification

Acute toxicity studies on fish, invertebrates, and algae are available for polysulfides, di-tert-bu. From the available fish study, no quantitative exposure/effect relationship could be established: there is uncertainty on exposure concentrations from analytical measurements but qualitatively no mortality or sub-lethal effect was observed at a concentration equeivalent to the one producing 50% immobilisation of daphnia (EC50 -48h = 0,24 mg/L). Therefore invertebrates are more sensitive than fish. With respect to algae, the ErC50 -72h = 0.84 mg/L, slightly above the result for invertebrate.

Based on these resultss, in the range 0.1 - 1 mg/L, polysulfides, di-tert-bu is to be classified as very toxic to aquatic organisms as regards acute effects. Moreover, polysulfides, di-tert-bu is not ready biodegradable and its log Pow value is 5.6

Polysulfides, di-tert-bu is not classified in annex I of the former 67/548/EEC directive (DSD) but according to the criteria it can be self-classified as N-R50/53. According to regulation 1272/2008/EC (CLP) criteria, it has to be self-classified as "Aquatic Chronic Category 1." For mixtures containing the substance a multiplying factor M = 1 should be used.
