Additional information

One study investigating the toxicity of Diisopropyl adipate (CAS 6938-94-9) to freshwater algae is available. The non GLP study was conducted under static conditions according to OECD guideline 201 using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata as test organism (Bouillon, 2012). Five nominal concentrations were tested (15, 21, 29, 41 and 58 mg/L). No NOEC calculation was performed. The 72 h- EC50 was determined as 41 mg/L based on nominal test concentration. Due to the lack of analytical monitoring and insufficient method descriptions, this test was considered to be invalid for assessing the toxicity of Diisopropyl adipate (CAS 6938-94-9) to freshwater invertebrates. Therefore, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances and read-across, a read-across to the structurally related category member Dibutyl adipate (CAS 105-99-7) was conducted. Further justification is given within the endpoint summary 6.1 and within the category justification section 13. In this case of read-across, the best suited (highest degree of structural similarity, nearest physico-chemical properties) read-across substance within this category was used.

The study with Dibutyl adipate (CAS 105-99-7) was conducted by a Japanese authority according to OECD guideline 201 using Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata as test organism (MOE, 1993). Test concentrations between 1 and 5 mg/L were applied. The test concentrations were prepared using DMSO as vehicle in a concentration of 100 mg/L. However, the high vehicle concentration is not considered to influence the outcome of the study as (i) the vehicle did not indicate to have any adverse effects on the test organisms and (ii) the substance has a water solubility higher than the tested concentrations (water solubility: 13 mg/L). The 72 h-EC50 was determined to be 5.16 mg/L and the 72 h-NOEC 3 mg/L based on nominal test concentrations.

Due to the structural and property similarities with the tested category member Dibutyl adipate (CAS 105-99-7), this result is also applicable to read across to Diisopropyl adipate (CAS 6938-94-9).
