Description of key information

Based on its physical-chemical properties, Activated Carbon - Low Density Skeleton is not classifyable as hazardous for physical-chemical hazards according to the DSD and GHS/CLP (regulation 1272/2008 EC)

The substance is a black solid in granulate, pellet or powdered form, odourless and not soluble in water.

The melting point is estimated to be over 1000 degrees Celsius. Experimental determination has been waived.

The density was determined to be 2.31 g/cm3 at 20 degrees C according to OECD 109.

The particle size was determined by method ECB/TM/feb 1996, the mass median diametre found to be 20.3 micrometres while the D10 was < 4.8 micrometres.

The substances showed no exothermic effects below 400 degrees Celsius according to EU method A.16. (An exothermic effect was only observed at 430 degrees Celsius). therefore the substance cannot be classified as pyrogenic.

The substanc did not ignite under method EU A.10. Therefore the substance is not classified as a flammable solid.

The carbon skeleton of the Activated Carbon does not contain any dissociative groups. Impurities consisting of phosphoric acid and its sodium salts do dissociate at various pH, in line with the triprotic acid anion: pKa1 = 2.12 -2.16 ; pKa2 = 7.09 - 7.21 and pKa3 = 12.32 - 12.67 at 25 degrees C.
