Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Short-term toxicity to fish:

Exposure of rainbow trout to the test item gave LL50 values of greater than 100 mg/L loading rate WAF. The No Observed Effect Loading (NOEL) Rate was 100 mg/L loading rate WAF.

Long-term toxicity to fish:

Slag stones do not exhibit any hazardous effect on any stage of early fish development e.g. fertilization of eggs, egg number, egg distribution, development of larvae.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

The acute toxicity of the test item to the freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna has been investigated in accordance with OECD Guideline 202 and gave a 48-Hours EL50 value of greater than 100 mg/L loading rate WAF. The No Observed Effect Loading Rate was 100 mg/L loading rate WAF.

Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

ABS: Test de toxicité chronique - Ceriodaphnia dubia à 7 jours: 7 d-NOEC (reproduction) = 3 g/L (nominal), 7 d-NOEC (mortality) = 7 g/L (nominal)

ABS: Test de toxicité chronique - Ceriodaphnia dubia à 7 jours: 7 d-NOEC (reproduction) = 10 g/L (nominal), 7 d-NOEC (mortality) = 50 g/L (nominal)

Fresh slags, ferrous metal, blast furnace (air cooled – ABS) had no significant effect on the reproductive output of Daphnia magna according to C.20 Daphnia magna reproduction test of EU-Regulation 440/2008 at concentrations of > 1563 mg/L

Short-term toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria:

The short-term toxicity of the test item on the growth of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was investigated in accordance with OECD Guideline 201 and, when exposed to a pH adjusted test solution, gave EL50 values of greater than 100 mg/L loading rate WAF. The No Observed Effect Loading Rate was 100 mg/L loading rate WAF.

Toxicity to microorganisms:

The effect of the test item on the respiration of activated sewage sludge gave a 3-Hour EC50 value of greater than 1000 mg/L. The No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) after 3 hours exposure was 1000 mg/L

Sediment toxicity:

No special studies on sediment toxicity to benthic organisms are available but several observations suggest that slags do not negatively influence the sediment quality and that slags are excellent substrate for growth of benthos.
