Substance characterisation

The test substance tetrasodium N,N-bis(carboxylatomethyl)-L-glutamic acid is very well soluble in water and has a very low octanol-water partitioning coefficient (log Kow < 0). Therefore in the environment it is not expected to sorb to organic matter or to accumulate in organic tissue. Thus GLDA-Na4 will remain in the water phase of the water/sediment system and in soil system it will remain in the porewater. GLDA-Na4 is to be considered as a readily biodegradable substance, as was demonstrated in a range of studies; GLDA is anaerobically biodegradable, as demonstrated with a study performed according OECD 311 TG.

Classification and PBT

This means that the substance does not fulfill the criteria for bioaccumulative and persistent (as part of PBT and vPvB) and does not need to be classified as an acute or chronic hazard for the environment according to the CLP criteria, neither will it lead to classification for long-term effects in the environment according to the criteria of the Dangerous Substances Directive.
