The aquatic hazard assessment of GLDA-H4 reveals neither a need to classify the substance as dangerous to the environment, nor is it a PBT or vPvB substance. The substance is readily biodegradable and has a very low log Kow, this indicates that the substance will not be persistent or bioaccumulative. There are no further indications that the substance may be hazardous to the environment.


Based on the expected use, the effect of GLDA-Na4 (CAS No. 51981 -21 -6) (Batch no.FC-C11836) on three terrestrial species has been evaluated.

The effect of GLDA-Na4 on mortality, growth and the reproductive potential of the earthworm species Eisenia fetida (Annelida, Lumbricidae) according to OECD Guideline 222 (2004). The NOEC based on Geometric mean measured concentration concerning growth and reproduction was determined to be 117.8 mg a.i./kg soil DW. No ECx-values were calculated since no statistically significant mortality and reduction of body weight gain or reproduction occurred.

The phytotoxicity of GLDA-Na4 to three terrestrial plant species was determined in a seedling emergence and seedling growth test over a period of 21 days according to OECD 208 (July 2006). Test systems comprised one monocotyledons (oats, Poaceae), and two dicotyledons (rape, Brassicaceae; soybean, Leguminosae).

The toxic effects of the test item were determined on day 7, 14 and 21 by visual observations (number of emerged seedlings and phytotoxic effects) and on day 21 by shoot height and shoot fresh weight determination.

The NOEC based on geometric mean measured concentration concerning shoot height, shoot fresh weight and seedling emergence was determined to be 358.2 mg a.i./kg dw.

The effects of GLDA-Na4 on the metabolic activity of soil micro-organisms were determined according to OECD Guideline 216 (2000).

The rates of nitrate formation were statistically significant higher in the geometric mean measured test item concentration 53.1 mg/kg DW compared to the untreated control after 7 and 28 days of exposure (Figure1). Consequently, there was no evidence that exposure to GLDA-Na4 inhibited the nitrogen transformation activity of soil microflora at the range of concentrations applied. The EC50 based on inhibition of nitrogen transformation processes could not be determined, as no inhibitory effects were observed at any test item concentration. The corresponding EC10 based on geometric mean was25.22 mg a.i./kg soil dry weight, this concentration is equivalent to the nominal concentration of 1000 mg/kg soil dry weight.
