Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The surface tension of the test substance C22-trimethylammonium chloride (Oh 05/233) was
determined as a function of concentration. From the change in slope the critical micelle
concentration (cmc) was determined.
Result:
The critical micelle concentration of C22-alkyltrimethylammonium chloride is 0.01 g/L at
25°C.
For ecotoxicological purposes, this value should be taken as the solubility.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
10 mg/L
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Estimation of cmc from literature data

The following eqn. for the cmc of alkyl trimethyl ammonium chlorides is given in the literature [I.J.

Lin, Tenside Detergents 17, 119-123 (1980)]:

log(cmc) = 1.64 - 0.286n

where n is the length of the alkyl chain and cmc is in mol/L.

For n = 22 this gives a cmc of 2.2x10-5 M = 8.9 x 10-3 g/L. Within experimental error, this value

agrees with our surface tension experiments.
