Description of key information

Skin irritation and Eye irritation studies were conducted according to recognized guidelines.
Chemical safety assement regarding respiratory irritation was done on the basis of observation of worker responses to high concentrations of airbourne dust containing high concentrations of N-(carboxymethyl)-N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine, originating/arising when handling the substance in the dry, pure form.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not irritating)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Respiratory irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Additional information

As could be ecspected from the structure of N-(carboxymethyl)-N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine, containing several acidic functional groups, studies/experience has shown that the dry substance has pronounced corrosive and irritating properties when in contact with the eyes or the respirotory system, respectively. Skin irritation studies in rabbit has shown that the substance does not have acidic/corrosive/irritating propeties sufficient to be classified as corrosive or irritating to the skin.

Effects on eye irritation: corrosive

Effects on respiratory irritation: irritating
