Terrestrial toxicity studies are available concerning the effects of cloquintocet-mexyl on earthworms, soil microorganisms and birds. The substance is of low toxicity to earthworms, with a 14 day LC50 of >1000 mg/kg (dry weight) soil being reported in an OECD 207 study (Rufli, 1989).
Although no specific data is available for cloquintocet-mexyl, cloquintocet-mexyl is used on a wide range of plants as a safener. Therefore, at application rates of up to 15 g/ha, cloquintocet-mexyl is considered to have no adverse effects on plants.
In a 28-day study performed according to the BBA Part VI, 1-1 guideline (Morgenroth, 1992) it was concluded that cloquintocet-mexyl (CGA185072) had no significant effects on soil respiration and nitrification at soil concentrations up to 0.27 mg/kg (dry weight) in the soils tested. However this low NOEC is based on the highest concentration tested. The true NOEC is expected to be significantly higher. Only two concentrations were tested and no ECxx value could be derived from this study. Thus, although the study is reliable, it is considered not adequate for the purpose of risk assessment under REACH.
Cloquintocet-mexyl is of low toxicity to birds, as indicated by the results of six acute toxicity studies.
