The stability of cloquintocet-mexyl has been tested for hydrolysis, phototransformation in water and phototransformation in soil. In hydrolysis studies, cloquintocet-mexyl has been found to be subject to de-esterification, and the corresponding acid (i.e. [(5-chloroquinolin-8-yl)oxy]acetic acid; CAS#: 88349-88-6; company code CGA153433) was the sole hydrolysis product identified. The rate of hydrolysis varies from very rapid in strongly alkaline solution to very slow for pH ranging from 5 to 9. Photodegradation of cloquintocet-mexyl in water was found to be rapid, with a half-life of 0.62 days under summer sunlight conditions at 30° N (assuming 12 hours a day). In the case of soil, results suggest that photolysis on soil surfaces is not likely to significantly enhance the already very fast microbial degradation of cloquintocet-mexyl in soils.
