Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

General Information

Implementation:
EU
Remarks:
The classification is according to the harmonized classification and labelling for benzoyl chloride as listed in 1st ATP EC 790/2009 ammending EC 1272/2008 (CLP regulation).
Acute Tox Inhalation:
The minimum classification 'Acute Tox 4* - H332' has been replaced by 'Acute Tox 3 - H331' based on:
- Earlier regulatory decision based on all available data [weight of evidence] to classify the substance as R20/21/22
See ECBI/90/06 Rev. 8, dd. 22 Aug 2007(Decision by 'Technical Committee on Classification and Labelling of Dangerious Substances' to update the classification for Benzoylchloride to Xn; R20/21/22 in the 31st ATP (DSD)) and ECBI/41/06, dd. 20 Feb 2006 (BE proposal to revise the Annex I entries for classification of Acute toxicity for benzoylchloride to Xn; R20/21/22, whereas the proposed classification for acute tox inhalation Xn;R20 was based on data cited in IUCLID (EU & USEPA: Bayer report N° 8418 and Izmerov et all 1982))
- Change in classification criteria from DSD to CLP, i.e. split up range DSD R20: 2 - 20 mg/l/4h into CLP: Cat 3 2.0 - 10.0 mg/L/4h and Cat 4: 10.0 - 20.0 mg/l/4h.
Serious eye damage/ eye irritation:
Benzoylchloride has been shown to cause eye damage. As this hazard is covered by the classificatin as skin corr 1B - H314: Cases severe skin burns and eye damage, no separate hazard statement for eye damage has been selected and as reason for no classification 'conclusive but not sufficient for classification' has been selected.
Remarks regarding the classification of physical hazards:
Benzoyl chloride is an organic liquid, therefore the physical hazard statements for gases and solids are not relevant. In these cases, the reason for no classification is equal to "conclusive but not sufficient for classification". Besides, the reason for no classification for the flammable aerosols physical hazards is that benzoyl chloride is not an aerosol dispenser.
Also, based on the structure, many classifications on physical hazards can be found. Indeed, based on the structure of benzoyl chloride, the test substance should not be classified for explosives properties, self-reactive substances and mixtures, substances and mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases, oxidising liquids, organic peroxides, pyrophoric liquids and self-heating substances.
