Description of key information

An acute toxicity study was conducted with Daphnia magna on the chemical NaDMH. Analysis of the test preparations at 0 and 48 hours showed measured test concentrations to be near nominal and so the results are based on nominal test concentrations only.
There was no immobilisation in 20 daphnids exposed to a test concentration of 100 mg/L for a period of 48 hours. It was considered unnecessary and unrealistic to test at concentrations in excess of 100 mg/L. The acute toxicity of the test material to the freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna has been investigated and gave a 48 hour EC50 of greater than 100 mg/L. Correspondingly the No Observed Effect Concentration was 100 mg/L.
An acute toxicity study conducted with Daphnia magna was also conducted on the analogue chemical DMH. DMH was tested at nominal concentrations of 3000, 5000, 7000, 10000, 15000 mg/L. In the highest test concentrations of 15000 mg/L and 10000 mg/L, 100% mortality occurred within 12 and 48 hours respectively. There were partial kills of 55% in the 7000 mg/L and 35% in the 5000 mg/L concentrations within 24 hours. No deaths were recorded in the 3000 mg/L or control test chambers. The LC50 was estimated to be 6200 mg/L as determined by the Litchfield & Wilcoxon Method.
