Description of key information

Several actue toxicity studies are available. In the acute oral toxicity studies, the LD50 in rats and mice ranged from 660 to 1930 mg/kg bw. LC50 (0.5-4 h) in rats and Syrian hamsters ranged from 24 to 37 g/m3. It is therefore concluded that the acute toxicity of acetaldehyde is low. LD50 values by the dermal route were not available.

Additional information

These data based on the International Programme on Chemical Safety (IPCS) published under the joint sponsorship of the United Nations Environment Programme, the International Labour Organisation, and the World Health Organisation (Environmental Health Criteria 167).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the data available, acetaldehyde is not classified according to 67/548/EEC (DSD) and 1272/2008/EEC (CLP).
