Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Eyes
In case of contact,Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes,
occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Skin
Flush with water, then wash with soap and water.
Inhalation
Move exposed individual to fresh air. Call a physician.
Ingestion
If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give fluids or induce
vomiting if patient is unconscious or having convulsions. Get medical attention.
Notes to Physician
This product reacts with water in the acid contents of the stomach to form methanol. The
combination of visual disturbances, metabolic acidosis and formic acid in urine is evidence of
methanol poisoning. The therapeutic intravenous administration of ethanol (10 mls/hour)
allows methanol to be preferentially oxidized and reduces production of methanol metabolites.
Acidosis must be treated with intravenous administration of sodium bicarbonate and methanol
elimination may be increased by hemodialysis, as indicated.Treatment should be based on
blood methanol levels and acid-base balance.

Fire-fighting measures

Flash Point, COC: 84°C (183°F)
Autoignition Temp.: not determined
Flammability Limits: not determined
General Information
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH
(approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic
gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures
Avoid eye and skin contact. Do not breathe fumes or inhale vapors.
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards
Irritating fumes and organic acid vapors may develop when material is exposed to elevated
temperatures or open flame.

Extinguishing Media
Water spray, foam, carbon dioxide, dry chemical.
Hazardous product of combustion
Hydrogen chloride, carbon monoxide, irritating and toxic fumes and gases, carbon dioxide,
silicon oxide.

Accidental release measures

General Information
Use proper personal protective equipment.
Spills/Leaks response
May be hazardous to aquatic life if released to open waters. Absorb spill with inert material
(e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth), then place in suitable container. Clean up spills immediately,
observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Remove all sources of ignition.
Use a spark-proof tool. Provide ventilation. Place under an inert atmosphere.
Do not get water inside containers.
Recommended Disposal
Hydrolyze material by mixing with water in a hood. Organic layer may be incinerated.
Alternately, absorb onto clay or vermiculite and dispose of absorbent material as solid waste.
Follow all chemical pollution control regulations.

Handling and storage

Handling
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse.
Avoid breathing dust, vapor, mist, or gas. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Empty
containers retain product residue, (liquid or vapor), and can be dangerous. Keep container
tightly closed. Avoid contact with heat, sparks and flame. Avoid ingestion and inhalation.
Handle under an inert atmosphere.
Storage
Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame. Keep away from sources of ignition. Store in a
tightly closed container. Containers require grounding during use.Store in a cool, dry,
well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Do not expose to air. Store
protected from moisture. Store under an inert atmosphere.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Engineering Controls
Use explosion-proof ventilation equipment. Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use only under a chemical fume
hood.
Respiratory Protection
If exposure exceeds TLV air-supplied or combination organic vapor amine gas respirator.
Eye and Face Protection
Chemical worker’s goggles. Do not wear contact lenses.
Other Clothing and Equipment
Rubber, neoprene or nitrile gloves. An eyewash and emergency shower should be available.
Launder clothing before reuse.

Stability and reactivity

Chemical Stability
Stable in sealed containers stored under dry nitrogen.
Conditions to Avoid
Combustible; avoid contact with heat, sparks or open flame.
Incompatibility (materials to avoid)
Reacts with water and moisture in air liberating methanol.Avoid contact with peroxides,
oxidizing agents, alcohols, acids, Lewis acids.
Hazardous Decomposition Products
Organic Acid Vapors.
Hazardous Polymerization
Will not occur.

Disposal considerations

Disposal
Dispose of in a manner consistent with federal, state, and local regulations.
