Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Administrative data

First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air and obtain medical attention.

Emergency measure - Eyes: Wash immediately with water for at least 15 minutes.

Emergency measure - Skin: Wash the affected area with cool water for approximately 15

minutes, after first removing any contaminated clothing.

Emergency measure - Ingestion: Obtain medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Dry chemical or halon are suitable.

Product arising from burning: Products of combustion may contain carbon oxides and soot.

Product determined by test: N

Protective equipment: An approved self-contained breathing apparatus is suitable.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Wear suitable protective clothing (see 2.3.1). Collect the

spillage using a vacuum and transfer to a labelled, sealed

container. Avoid dry sweeping to reduce exposure to a

minimum. Neutralise the spill area with soda ash (sodium

carbonate). Do not allow the substance to enter water

systems. Dispose of spilt material at a licensed facility.

Handling and storage

Handling: Handle under local exhaust ventilation to control dust

levels. If exposure cannot be avoided, wear skin and eye

protection; chemical resistant gloves, eg. neoprene or

vinyl, and safety glasses or chemical safety goggles are

suitable. If airborne exposure is likely a respirator (class

P2) should be worn.

Storage: Store in a clearly labelled, sealed container in a cool,

dry, well ventilated area, away from heat and separated from

oxidisers and alkalis.

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: None reported.

Chemical reaction with water: The substance rapidly hydrolyses in water to give

oxydiphthalic acid.

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Recovery from polymers is not possible.

A method for recycling/reclaiming spilt material that has

not been in contact with water is being developed.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: Neutralise with aqueous alkali (eg sodium carbonate or

hydroxide) solution.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Discharge following extensive dilution with water, which

will result in the formation of the corresponding acid, is

possible.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Incineration at an approved facility is possible, either as

solid or in a combustible solvent.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Disposal by this route is possible after pretreatment with

sodium hydroxide to form the sodium salt of the carboxylic

acid.

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: The substance itself will not enter the public domain.
