Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
read-across from supporting substance (structural analogue or surrogate)
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Non-GLP, standard method, company data, reliable with restrictions
Justification for type of information:
Hydrocarbons, C9-C10, aromatics, >1% Naphthalene are a combination of Hydrocarbons, C9 Aromatics and Hydrocarbons, C10-C12 Aromatics. Read across data is available for Hydrocarbons, C9 Aromatics and Hydrocarbons, C10-C12 Aromatics and the worst case scenario for each end point has been presented.
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
read-across: supporting information
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Wilhelmy plate method used
GLP compliance:
no
Remarks:
Not specified
Type of method:
plate method
Key result
Surface tension:
29.1 mN/m
Temp.:
25 °C
Conc.:
100 vol%
Conclusions:
The surface tension of Hydrocarbons,C9, aromatics, is 29.1 mN/m.
Executive summary:

A standard method was followed and the values were confirmed by the company. The data is therefore considered reliable and suitable for use for this endpoint. The surface tension of Hydrocarbons, C9, aromatics is 29.1 mN/m.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
read-across from supporting substance (structural analogue or surrogate)
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2010
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Acceptable, well-documented study report which meets basic scientific principles, no GLP lab.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: Wilhelmy plate
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Wilhelmy plate method is used to measure the surface tension using a standardized plate with a ring/plate tensiometer. The plate is moved towards the surface until the meniscus connects with it. The surface tension is calculated from the resulting force. Due to uncertain wetting behavior, the plate can only be used for interfaces under certain limitations.
GLP compliance:
no
Remarks:
Not specified
Type of method:
plate method
Key result
Surface tension:
30.4 mN/m
Temp.:
25 °C
Conc.:
100 vol%
Conclusions:
The measured surface tension at 25°C is 30.4 mN/m according to the Wilhemy plate methodology.
Executive summary:

The measured surface tension at 25°C is 30.4 mN/m according to the Wilhemy plate methodology.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because based on structure, surface activity is not expected or cannot be predicted
the study does not need to be conducted because surface activity is not a desired property of the material

Description of key information

Hydrocarbons, C9-C10, aromatics, >1% Naphthalene are a combination of Hydrocarbons, C9 Aromatics and Hydrocarbons, C10-C12 Aromatics. Read across data is available for Hydrocarbons, C9 Aromatics and Hydrocarbons, C10-C12 Aromatics and the worst case scenario for each end point has been presented.

The surface tension of Hydrocarbons, C9, aromatics, is 29.1 mN/m. This was based on neat material rather than in solution.

The surface tension of Hydrocarbons, C10, aromatics, >1% naphthalene is 29 to 32 mN/m at 25°C. according to the Wilhelmy plate testing methodology.

This data is used for read across to Hydrocarbons, C9-C10, aromatics, >1% Naphthalene.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The surface tension of Hydrocarbons, C9, aromatics was reported based on the neat material rather than in solution.

The surface tension of Hydrocarbons, C10, aromatics, >1% naphthalene is 29 to 32 mN/m at 25°C according to the Wilhelmy plate testing methodology.

However, surface tension may be waived In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII. The surface tension study does not need to be conducted as, based on the structure of Hydrocarbons, C10, aromatics, >1% naphthalene, surface activity is not expected or predicted and surface tension is not a desired property of the material.
