Details on inoculum:
Secondary effluent collected at municipal waste water treatment plant, which primarily receives domestic sewage.
Duration of test (contact time):
28 d
Initial conc.:
2.5 mg/L

% degradation (O2 consumption)
Value:
22.3
Sampling time:
28 d
Results with reference substance:
The biodegradation of the reference substance sodium benzoate was 73.0% in 28 days, therefore the test can be considered valid.
Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Interpretation of results:
inherently biodegradable, fulfilling specific criteria
Conclusions:
The tested substance 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate cannot be considered readily biodegradable, on the basis of the results, as biodegradation of 22.3 % was observed in 28 days.
Executive summary:

A OECD Guideline study 301D was performed on 2 -phenoxyethyl acrylate according to GLP. The substance demonstrated a biodegradation of 22.3 % in 28 days, and can therefore not be considered readily biodegradable, as criteria for readily biodegradation is 60% in 28 days.

Endpoint:
biodegradation in water: ready biodegradability
Type of information:

Adequacy of study:
key study
Justification for type of information:
Read-across from a OECD 301 study on one closely structural and physicochemical related substance: 2-Phenoxyethyl acrylate (M140).
For further read-across justification se document attached in section 13.

Key result
Parameter:
% degradation (O2 consumption)
Value:
22.3
Sampling time:
28 d
Validity criteria fulfilled:
not applicable
Interpretation of results:
inherently biodegradable
Conclusions:
No data is available for 2-Phenoxyethyl methacrylate (T).
Biodegradation in water was performed on 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate in accordance with OECD Guideline study 301D. The substance demonstrated a biodegradation of 22.3 % in 28 days, and cannot be considered readily biodegradable, as criteria for readily biodegradation is 60% in 28 days.Based on read-across to other acrylates it was however concluded that 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate is at least inherently biodegradable.
Due to structural and physico-chemical similarity to 2-Phenoxyethyl acrylate, it can also be concluded for 2-Phenoxyethyl methacrylate that it is inherently biodegradable as well.
Executive summary:

Justification for type of information:
QSAR based on data for several acrylates
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Read-across from other substances with structure similar to structure of test substance
GLP compliance:
yes
Remarks:
Assumed to be performed in accordance to GLP
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Details on properties of test surrogate or analogue material:not relevant

Preliminary study:
Read-across to results from ready-biodegradabilty studies (OECD 301) for other similar substances showed that the test substance is most likely to be ready biodegradable. EpiSuite calculations support this. However, as the conclusion from ready-biodegradability test was that the substance is not readily biodegradable, it was assessed that a conservative conclusion from the read-across study is that the test substance is very likely to be at least inherently biodegradable.
Test performance:
Read-across
Remarks on result:
other: Not relevant, read-across
Details on results:
Read-across, so no %degradation is specified.
Results with reference substance:

Interpretation of results:
inherently biodegradable
Conclusions:
Based on the Read-across assessment the substance is concluded to be inherently biodegradable.

Description of key information

No data is available for 2-Phenoxyethyl methacrylate (T).

Biodegradation in water was performed on 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate (S) in accordance with OECD Guideline study 301D. The substance demonstrated a biodegradation of 22.3 % in 28 days, and cannot be considered readily biodegradable, as criteria for readily biodegradation is 60% in 28 days.

Due to structural and pysico-chemical similarity to 2-Phenoxyethyl methacrylate, a biodegradation of 22.3 % in 28 days meaning that it is not readily biodegradable can also be concluded for 2-Phenoxyethyl methacrylate as well.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
inherently biodegradable, fulfilling specific criteria

Additional information

The pass-criteria for readily biodegradability test was not full-filled in the readily biodegradability test of 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate (S).However, read-across to other substances with similar structures and EpiSuite calculations strongly supports that 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate (S) should at least be inherently biodegradable, fulfilling specific criteria.

Due to structural and physico-chemical similarity to 2-Phenoxyethyl methacrylate, the same can also be concluded for 2 -Phenoxyethyl methacrylate as well.
