Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2014
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.12 (Flammability (Contact with Water))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
not specified
Key result
Remarks on result:
no reaction with water observed

Principle

The test substance is tested according to the step by step sequence described below; if ignition occurs at any step, no further testing is necessary.

Step 1

A small quantity of the test substance was placed in a glass tray filled with distilled water of 20 ºC.

Result: no gas emission was observed.

Step 2

A small quantity of the test substance was placed onto the centre of a filter paper floating on the surface of distilled water in a glass tray. Result: no gas emission was observed.

Step 3

The test substance was placed into a pile 20 mm high and 30 mm diameter. A few drops of water were added to the hollow.

Result: no gas emission was observed.

Step 4

25 g of the test substance were put in a conical flask. This flask was connected with a measuring cylinder via a plastic tube. The measuring cylinder was placed upside down into a container filled with water and also completely filled with water. Thus, gas evolved in the conical flask would displace a corresponding amount of water in the measuring cylinder. After adding ca. 50 mL of water to the test substance the gas evolution was measured each hour during a seven hour period.

Result: no gas emission was observed.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The reaction of the test substance Titanium nitride with water did not result in the evolution of gas. Consequently, titanium nitride has to be considerd as non hazardous.
Executive summary:

A study was performed according to EU method A.12 to determine whether the reaction of titanium nitride (>99.6 % purity) with water or damp air leads to the development of dangerous amounts of gas or gases which may be highly flammable.

The reaction of the test substance titanium nitride with water did not result in the evolution of gas. Consequently, titanium nitride has to be considered as non hazardous.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2014
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
not specified
Key result
Test procedure:
burning time (test type not further specified)
Remarks:
or specified in description of method
Burning time:
760 s

Preliminary screening test

The test substance was formed into a powder train about 250 mm long by 20 mm wide by 10 mm high on a fireclay plate. A hot flame from a gas burner was applied to one end of the powder train. Ignition occurred and combustion propagated along 200 mm of the powder train within 760 s.

Burning rate test

Since combustion propagated along 200 mm in more than 4 minutes the test substance has not to be considered as highly flammable and no further testing was required.

Interpretation of results:
non flammable
Conclusions:
Titanium nitride is considered as not highly flammable.
Executive summary:

The flammability of Titanium nitride (>99.6 % a.i.) was tested according to Regulation 440/2008/EC Method A.10. In a preliminary screening test, the test substance was formed into a powder train about 250 mm long, 20 mm wide and 10 mm high.

Ignition occurred and combustion propagated along 200 mm within 760 s.

According to the guideline, performance of a main study for the determination of the burning rate of the test substance was not required. Based on the results obtained, the test substance is considered as not highly flammable.

Description of key information

Titanium nitride was tested in a study according to EU method A.10 and is considered to be not highly flammable.
In addition, the reaction of titanium nitride with water in a test conducted according to EU method A.12 did not result in the evolution of gas. Consequently, titanium nitride has to be considered as non-hazardous.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

A study was performed in accordance to EU method A.10. The combustion propagated along 200 mm was observed in more than 4 minutes (760 s). According to the guideline, performance of a main study for the determination of the burning rate of the test substance was not required. Therefore, titanium nitride is considered as not highly flammable. Additionally, a study was performed according to EU method A.12. The reaction of the test substance titanium nitride with water did not result in the evolution of gas. Consequently, titanium nitride has to be considered as non-hazardous.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Since the combustion time of the test substance exceeds 10 minutes titanium nitride is not classified as flammable solid in accordance with Section 2.7.2.3., Annex I of Regulation 1272/2008/EC and Section 33.2., of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (5threvised ed.).
