Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The test was performed according to the Dir. 92/69/EEC (OJ L383A) protocol.
GLP compliance:
no
Test procedure:
burning time (test type not further specified)
Remarks:
or specified in description of method
Remarks on result:
other: non flammable

The experiment result can be considered as negative and the substance can be considered non flammable.

Interpretation of results:
non flammable
Conclusions:
Direct Yellow 086 is a non flammable solid.
Executive summary:

The test was performed according to internationally accepted testing method A.10. During the experiment, the substance significanlty swell and char, without the formation of any flame.

Thus, the experiment result can be considered as negative and the substance can be considered non flammable.

Description of key information

Direct Yellow 086 is not classified.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

1. Flammability: In accordance with REACH Annex XI this study is scientifically unjustified. The flammability of liquids is determined on basis of their flashpoint. However the flammability was also analyzed for the solid form of Direct Yellow 86. The solid substance did not propagate burning of a 200 mm length of the strip in less than four minutes, therefore it is expected to be non flammable.

2. Pyrophoric properties: Testing of the substance for pyrophoric properties appears scientifically unjustified as the substance is market as aqueous suspension. As pyrophoric properties are only relevant for solids this study is omitted. The substance has no pyrophoric properties.

3. Contact with water: As the substance is market as aqueous solution and experience shows that there is no emission of flammable gases in contact with water the study is omitted. The substance has no potential to emit flammable gases in contact with water.

4. Self-heating: The study does not need to be conducted as Direct Yellow 86 is produced and market as liquid. The substance has no self-heating properties.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Direct Yellow 86 is a non-flammable liquid, is not flammable in contact with water, does not exhibit pyrophoric or self-heating properties. Based on the available information Direct Yellow 86 is not classified for physical hazards according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).
