Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Exposure by inhalation: Remove to fresh air, treat symptomatically. If symptoms develop seek medical advice.

Exposure by skin contact: Get immediate medical attention. Immediately wash with plenty of soap and water. Contaminated leather articles such as      shoes or belts must be discarded.

Exposure by eye contact: Immediately flush eye with water for at least 15 minutes while holding eyelids open. Get medical attention.

Exposure by ingestion: Get medical attention. Do not induce vomiting without medical advice. If conscious, washout mouth and give water to drink.

Fire-fighting measures

The substance is not flammable.

Formulated preparations of the substance are flammable and may release vapors that form flammable mixtures at or above the flash point. Vapors     can travel to a source of ignition and flash back. Empty product containers may contain product residue. Do not pressurise, cut, heat, weld or expose containers to flame or other sources of ignition.

Fire conditions may evolve oxides of carbon (COx) and nitrogen (NOx).

Carbon dioxide, dry powder and other extinguishing agents suitable for Class B fires. For large fires, use water spray of fog, thoroughly drenching the burning material.

Water mist may be used to cool closed containers.

In case of fire, wear a full face positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and protective suit.

Accidental release measures

Prevent material from entering sewers or waterways. If drains, streams, soil or sewers become contaminated, notify local authority. Spilled product    may pose a risk to the aquatic ecosystem if released.

Restrict access to area as appropriate unitl clean-up operations are complete. Use appropriate personal protective equipment. Stop or reduce any  leaks if it is safe to do so. Ventilate spill area if possible. Remove sources of ignition. Ensure clean-up is conducted by trained personnel only. Do not touch spilled material. Have emergency equipment (for fires, spills, leaks etc) readily available. Notify appropriate authorities.

Methods for clean up:

Small spills: Soak up spill with absorbent material. Place residues in a suitable, covered, properly labelled container. Wash affected area.

Large spills: Contain liquid using absorbent material, by digging trenches or by diking. Reclaim into recovery or salvage drums or tank truck for proper disposal. Clean contaminated surfaces with water or aqueous cleaning agents. Contact an approved waste hauler for disposal of contaminated recovered material. Dispose of material in compliance with local/national regulations.

Handling and storage

The substance should be stored, handled and used under conditions of good industrial hygiene and in conformity with any local regulations in order to minimise exposure.

The formulated product (40% QM-Ph in ethylbenzene) will be applied to the styrene purification process via a dedicated injection line. The process  is essentially enclosed and during normal operation, personnel contact with the solution will be minimal.

Containers feeding the system will be stored in a bunded area.

The formulated preparations will be stored in suitable labeled containers. Store the containers tightly closed. Store away from heat and sources of  ignition. Have appropriate fire extinguishers available in and near the storage area. Connections must be grounded to avoid elecctrical charges. Store separately from oxidisers.

Exposure controls / personal protection

The formulated product (40% QM-Ph in ethylbenzene) will be supplied in UN approved containers. The formulated product will be applied to the styrene purification process via a dedicated injection line. The process is essentially enclosed and during normal operation, personnel contact with the solution will be minimal. When exposure cannot be prevented or adequately controlled full personnel protective equipment, including cartridge filter mask (A), chemical splash goggles, chemical gauntlet gloves and chemical resistant suit and rubber boots will be worn at all times. The new substance is  not anticipated to have a significant vapour pressure, but the ethylbenzene solvent does.

Stability and reactivity

Contact with strong oxidizers (e.g. chlorine, peroxides, chromates, nitirc acid, perchlorate, concentrated oxgen, permanganate) may generate heat, fires, explosions and/or toxic vapors.

Disposal considerations

The product is suitable for disposal in an approved landfill or by controlled incineration. The product is ashless and can be burned directly in appropriate equipment. Any chemical waste is a potential environmental pollutant is NOT suitable for disposal via ground, municipal sewers, drains, natural  streams or rivers.

Empty drums should be taken for recycling, recovery, or disposal through a suitably qualified or licensed contractor.
