Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (sensitising)
Additional information:

The sensitising potential of 2 -ethylhex-2 -enal (read across; CAS 645 -62 -5) was investigated in the Guinea-Pig Maximisation test according to OECD 406 (Huels, 1989). The test animals were intradermally injected with an emulsion of Freund's complete adjuvant and the test substance in both the selected vehicle and an emulsion of Freund's complete adjuvant. One week later this was boosted by topical application of the test substance over the injection sites. Control group animals were treated in the same manner but the selected vehicle was used in place of the test substance. Two weeks after the second induction stage, all animals were challenged by topical application of both the vehicle and the test substance. The results indicate that the test substance does elicit a sensitisation response in the guinea pig.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
2-Ethylhex-2-enal (read across; CAS 645-62-5) is sensitising in the Guinea pig maximisation test (OECD 406).

Respiratory sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Additional information:
Migrated from Short description of key information:
No data available for the determination of the respiratory sensitisation potential.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available data for 2 -ethylhex-2 -enal (read across, CAS 645 -62 -5) and according to to the criteria of EU Directive 67/548/EEC and EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, 2 -ethylhexanal is classified as sensitising (Cat 1B).
