Additional information

There is no irritancy data available on the multiconstituent substance, but data is available on the main components from which it can be established that the substance does not exhibit any irritancy properties. Data on individual components:

SKIN IRRITATION:

Diiethylene glycol was subject to an EpiDerm™ skin irritation test. The test substance was topically exposed to the surface of a human reconstituted epidermis model for 1 hour followed by a cell viability test. The optical density of the extracts of the test substance treated tissue was compared to negative control values from treated tissue with PBS and is expressed as relative tissue viability. The relative tissues viability was 94.5 % and therefore2,2'-oxydiethanol was clearly not irritant. Ballantyne and Snellings (2007) found no skin irritation in rabbits when triethylene glycol (2,2’-(ethylenedioxy)diethanol) was applied undiluted under occlusive conditions.

 

EYE IRRITATION:

BASF (1961) reported no eye irritation effects after 1 and 24 hours when monoethylene glycol (ethan-1,2-diol) was given into the eyes of rabbits for 24 hours. . No ocular irritation occurred after application of 0.5 ml of undiluted diethylene glycol (2,2’-oxydiethanol) into the eyes of rabbits (Carpenter & Smyth, 1946). BRRC (1990) found no eye irritation when rabbit eyes were instilled with triethylene glycol (2,2’-(ethylenedioxy)diethanol). Scoring was done according to Draize.

From the available data, the multi-constituent substance based on MEG, DEG and TEG will not have any significant eye or skin irritation properties

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the lack of irritation following exposure, neither classification for eye nor skin irritancy is warranted under the criteria of directive 67/548 and regulation 1272/2008.
