Principles of method if other than guideline:
The surface tension result was not corrected using the Harkins-Jordan correction table as the correction is not applicable to the apparatus used. Once calibrated, the balance and ring assembly used in this test give a direct reading for surface tension that is within the requried accuracy (± 0.5 mN/m); this is a result of the reduced ring dimensions. This deviation has been considered to not have affected the integrity of the study.

The calibration factor, by which the measured surface tension of the sample solution is multiplied, was determined using the following equation:

φ = VL/VM

where:

φ = calibration factor

VL= literature value for surface tension of water at test temperature (mN/m)

VM= measured value for surface tension of water at test temperature (mN/m)

The mean calibration factor is 1.003 which gives a surface tension of a 0.986 g/l solution of test material has been determined to be 72.0 mN/m at 21.6 ± 0.5°C. The test material is considered not to be a surface-active material.

Executive summary:

In a determination of general physico-chemical properties study (Harlan project number: 0959/0224) the test material has been determined to be 72.0 mN/m at 21.6 ± 0.5°C. The test material is considered not to be a surface-active material.

The determination was carried out using a White Electrical Institute interfacial tension balance and a procedure based on the ISO 304 ring method. With the exception of the following deviation, the experimental procedure used complied with that specified in Method A5 Surface Tension of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008.

Substances showing a surface tension lower than 60 mN/m should be regarded as being surface-active.

It is evident from the information obtained in the hydrolysis test and data relating to the pH of the test material in water that negligible hydrolysis of the sample solution occurred during the course of the surface tension test.
