Description of key information

Several values for the flash point of naphthenic acid were reported based on experimental following the ASTM D93-72 (closed cup, Pensky-Martens) method and considered reliable without restrictions (K1). Values reported were 101, 113, 119, 126, 144 and 153 °C at 1013 hPa and were used to cover the endpoint in a weight of evidence approach.

Additional information

Because naphthenic acids are a mixture of many different isomers of cycloalkyl carboxylic acids, physicochemical properties vary according to the proportions of the individual compounds in their composition. Therefore it is not possible to set a specific flashpoint as this will vary dependent on the hydrocarbon component make-up of the complex mixture. A set of six studies conducted according to method ASTM D93 -72 on various naphthenic acids are addressed in this dossier. All results suggest a flash point of more than 100°C. Although not reported in this dossier there are over 50 additional studies within the company available, all supporting these results.

Based on the available data it can be safely concluded that the flash point of naphthenic acid is >100°C.
